(Sacramento) - Fifty years ago, hundreds of Chicano Mexican-American students walked out of their classrooms to protest decades of institutionalized racism. Now, Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles) is honoring their bravery, and their willingness to fight for their rights by presenting ACR 183. “In many ways, the system had given up on these kids,” says Assemblymember Carrillo. “But they had not given up on themselves.” Watch this Assembly Access Video to learn more about the Chicano Walkouts of East L.A., and how this event helped establish a voice for justice for the Latino community.
