Assemblymember Carrillo Nominates Barrio Action as 2019 Nonprofit of the Year

SACRAMENTO, CA – Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D-Los Angeles) is proud to announce the selection of Barrio Action, a youth and family center based in El Sereno, as the 51st District’s Nonprofit of the Year.

“It is my privilege to select Barrio Action as the Nonprofit of the Year in Assembly District 51,” said Assemblymember Carrillo. “Based in El Sereno, their mission to empower our most disadvantaged youth to be successful in all aspects of life, as well as provide a safe haven to the community by providing food assistance, resources and programming is what makes our neighborhoods thrive and our residents live in dignity.”

“Recognition is not the award – it’s knowing that your elected official knows what the nonprofit brings to their district,” said Tammy E. Membreno, Executive Director for Barrio Action Youth and Family Center, “Assemblymember Carrillo knows that and her support and acknowledgment means everything to us and the families we serve.”

Each year, California legislators are invited to choose a Nonprofit of the Year in their district and come together to celebrate at the California Nonprofits Day Luncheon. This event fosters relationships between elected officials and nonprofits doing important work in their communities. Since the first California Nonprofits Day in 2016, more than 250 nonprofits have been honored by their Assemblymembers and Senators.

Barrio Action Youth and Family Center was established to empower young people to succeed both academically and socially, working with people of all ages, with a special emphasis on helping high-risk and at-risk youth, young adults and their families. The staff of Barrio Action works in partnership with youth and their families, seeking to increase youth’s understanding of life choices available to them. Since 1977, they have provided more than 20,000 youth and families the tools to create and sustain a healthy and nurturing family life, thus establishing a commitment to education and develop and improve their social skills.

Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo was elected as the representative of the 51st Assembly District in December of 2017. She is a member of the Health, Appropriations, Utilities & Energy, Labor and Rules  Committees. Carrillo represents the people of East Los Angeles, Northeast Los Angeles, and the neighborhoods of El Sereno, Echo Park, Lincoln Heights, Chinatown and parts of Silver Lake.
